Tanker spills ten tonnes of beer near Yarm

ENVIRONMENTAL experts had to be called to help clean up ten tonnes of beer from a rural road.
The accident happened at Low Worsall, near Yarm, this afternoon when a tanker carrying waste beer spilt its cargo on to the road.
The Environment Agency had to be called in to prevent the alcohol from leaking into a nearby river.
A spokeswoman for the agency said: "Basically we've been working at the site to contain the spill, so there's no pollution to the nearby watercourse.
"The yeast content of beer means it can effectively suck oxygen from the water which can be quite devastating to wildlife."
The road was reopened at about 3pm. There were not believed to be any other vehicles involved in the accident.
